The aim of this PhD dissertation is to investigate the relationship between architecture and scenography, supported by a professional experience in this field and taking into consideration the XXth century reform of stage design. This work constitutes, on the one hand, an assay on the conceptual convergences and underlying influences of architecture and stage design, on the other, exposes the ambiguity of scenographic territory. The line of inquiry that was followed analyses different case studies, which are presented in this dissertation, and reflects the contemporaneous spirit of hybridization and experimentation, as well as the crosstalk of knowledge derived from different areas, in a clear balance between architecture, installation, sculpture and design. The diversity of the selected projects explore the complex relation between objects and animated bodies, as well as the transition from an impending architectonic materiality to a plastic conception of the scenic object. In this context, stage design is approached as an experimentation of processes and languages, which are common to architecture, building on themes such as material and constructive authenticity (an antagonist characteristic in relation to conventional stage design) or the use of geometric and adjustable scenic objects. The scenic devices evoke notions of volume, scale, gravity, thickness and density, which refer to architectural tradition and, simultaneously, to the relation that it establishes with the interpreters, invoking the human body and the way it experiences the scenic objects. The primacy of human presence on stage over the artifice of acting, integrating not only matters of perception, but also the notion of scenic space inhabitability is determinant in the characterization of the scenographic projects studied in this Work. This feature translates the close relation between the scenic object and its users, whose bodies are confronted with the rules established by experimenting the nature of space. Objects are enhanced by the presence of the interpreters, designed for them and as a function of their movements on stage. They work as an organism or space around the interpreter’s body, allowing him to inscribe himself in a narrative. Notwithstanding the material and constructive evidence apparent in the outline of the stage objects, their mere presence on stage does not convey by itself enough information for understanding the performance of the environment. It is the employment of these objects by the interpreter that completes the significance of each scenography, revealing the inhabitability of the scenic objects and transforming them into significant and recognizable objects. Through the reinterpretation of common objects in new contexts, the dimensions for experiencing reality are redefined. By combining everyday elements under a new perspective, different aspects of existence can be uncovered and when familiar elements are brought out of context, the fragility of the scenic object becomes visible, underlying the ambiguous perceptions between the real body and the character’s body, between the stage space and the allusive landscapes, between what really exists and what is evoked. Another recurring theme in this work is the question of flexibility, which corresponds to the experimentation that comprises dynamic scenographies, mobile and multiple, susceptible of changing the scenic landscape through their manipulation by the interpreters. This conception of transformable scenarios borders the definition of action design, where the scenography is consumed in the performance. Scenic objects cease to be the action locus to become the action themselves. Avoiding the confines of a la italiana paintings, scenic objects, as autonomous devices, create their own acting space (theatre within the theatre) and target a higher conceptual status with objective materializations bordering the definition of installation. In this context, the most relevant asset is the object‘s multiple transformation, based on the instantaneous aspect of experience, in order to transform the perception space into an experienced space. Reevaluating and exposing their hybrid, transient and ambiguous nature, scenic objects are located in the frontier between apparent abstraction, functionality and spatial appropriation, aspects of rational architecture, and evocation, employing to this effect antagonist codes within the same object, in the context of a clear reference to post-modernist postulates. This overlapping of differing conceptions - one of modern and functionalist birth, which peaks in Mies Van Der Rohe, and the other clearly symbolic and closer to the post-modernist understanding upheld by Robert Venturi – resides the sense of inhabitability in the otherwise “pure” and abstract objects. They are transformed into spatial containers of complex and hybrid character, denoted with common, everyday manifestations. Therefore scenic devices not only embody the concept of “machine-object”, but are also vehicles of significance, combining language and memory. It is the contradiction between function and significance, noticeable in these objects, that creates a positive tension in the theatric action by bringing together historically contradictory manifestations.en_US
