This paper presents a survey of the theory on stock market integration and an empirical analysis of the integration of the national stock markets of sixteen European countries in the “European Stock Market”, represented alternatively by two European indices: the EMU index and the Europe Index. A co-integration method is used, as a result of which, the domestic stock indices are classified in different degrees of integration at the European level: those perfectly co-integrated with the European indices, and those with a stationary long-term relation with the European indices but not co-integrated with them.-
