Uma Ruptura Epistemológica na Geografia - A Teoria dos Lugares Centrais

Abstract

A teoria dos lugares centrais teve uma importância muito grande no desenvolvimento da geografia da segunda metade deste século. Essa importância resultou de ser a primeira teoria de explicação do povoamento baseada na teoria económica. Este artigo procura revelar o significado teórico e metodológico da teoria no âmbito dos estudos geográficos. Procura mostrar a sua génese, as influências que levaram Christaller à sua proposição, o modo como se operou uma ruptura epistemológica no pensamento geográfico. A teoria dos lugares centrais marca decisivamente a assunção da geografia como uma ciência social.

The places central theory has had a major importance in the development of geography in the second half of this century, which derives from its being the first theory to explain settlement on the basis of economic theory. This article seeks to demonstrate the theoretical and methodological significance of this discovery in terms of the study of geography. It shows its genesis, the influences which 100 W. Christaller to his propasal, and the way in which it caused an epistemological break in geographical thought. The central places theory is decisive in the claims of geography to be a social science.
