O Corpo Sensível. Corporeidade e Afetividade em Merleau-Ponty

Abstract

In The Sensitive Body: Corporeality and Affectivity in Merleau-Ponty, we seek to interrogate and delve into the enigma of the sensitive body conceiving affectivity as the foundational way of being in the world in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy. Our study aims to demonstrate that the flesh acts as the in-between (“entre-deux”) of the sensitive body, which we term the affective-lived body (affective-bodily resonance of the world in us), crystallized in the fundamental affective tone of astonishment. This affective dimension of human thought and being constitutes the foundation and meaning of the entire life-world experience. We explore affectivity as a non-objectifying intentionality, a universal form of brute being, and an ontological rehabilitation of the sensible. This journey takes us from the esthesiological body to the libidinal, opening up to another understanding of feeling, desire, love, and thought. We further extend this exploration of the sensible into the realms of art, literature, and theology, envisioning the possibilities of an alternative metaphysics and an anonymous force at the heart of the world. Our research uncovers unthought aspects within Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, suggesting a renewed perspective on metaphysical categories and, in this way, perhaps revealing his own unthought. This thesis comprises two volumes. The first delves into the conceptual and phenomenological aspects of corporeality and affectivity. The second volume includes an Excursus that explores the philosophical consequences and new horizons of the metamorphoses of the sensitive. Throughout this work of reflection, we trace the path of a thinking sentient body, sensing infinite astonishment before “the strangeness of the world and things” and the enigma of our own incarnation.

: Em O corpo sensível: Corporeidade e afectividade em Merleau-Ponty, procuramos interrogar e aprofundar o enigma do corpo sensível, concebendo a afectividade como a maneira fundamental de ser-no-mundo na filosofia merleau-pontyana. O nosso estudo pretende mostrar que a carne actua como o entremeio («entre-deux») do corpo sensível, que designamos por corpo afectivo-vivido (ressonância afectivo-corporal do mundo em nós), cristalizado na tonalidade afectiva fundamental do espanto. Esta dimensão afectiva central do pensamento e do ser humano constitui o fundamento e o significado de toda a experiência do mundo da vida. Exploramos a afectividade enquanto intencionalidade não objectivante, forma universal do ser bruto e reabilitação ontológica do sensível. Este percurso conduz-nos do corpo estésico ao libidinal, abrindo para uma outra compreensão do sentir, do desejo, do amor e do pensamento. Estendemos ainda esta exploração aos domínios da arte, da literatura e da teologia, vislumbrando as possibilidades de uma outra metafísica e de uma força anónima no coração do mundo. A nossa investigação revela aspectos impensados na filosofia de Merleau-Ponty, sugerindo uma perspectiva renovada das categorias metafísicas e, deste modo, talvez, revelando o seu próprio impensado. Esta dissertação é composta por dois volumes. O primeiro aprofunda os aspectos conceptuais e fenomenológicos da corporeidade e da afectividade. O segundo compreende um Excursus que explora as consequências filosóficas e os novos horizontes de reflexão sobre as metamorfoses do sensível. Através deste trabalho de reflexão, traçamos o caminho de um corpo senciente pensante, ressentindo o espanto infinito perante «a estranheza do mundo e das coisas» e do enigma da nossa própria encarnação.
