Abstract: This thesis is set to evaluate the present theoretical production on landscape. To do so, it addresses the main fields of discussion of this theme, where vast disciplinary discussions are held and where complex multidisciplinary studies meet. The leading issue of this problem is due to, and takes part on the concept of landscape itself. To support this essay it needed to go through the current state of the art in some of the main thematic fields of investigation, namely: In the field of comprehension of the designation itself and the value of the use of the word, evaluating how the stabilization and uniformity of its use has gone by, mostly in recent times. In the field of geography, that considers itself the subject that investigates the landscape, despite the setbacks and advances that took place during the past century, and the divergent scattering of emergent tendencies, almost always refracting, due to the strong determinist and specialising pressure. In the artistic experiment, where, still today, lies the longest domain of thematic and conceptual exploration, from the set of the institution of landscape as relevant value to the western society. Lastly, also in the field of the subjects of the design and of the architectural conceptualisation, and specially of the landscape architecture, where lies an important link with the transformation of the physical environment, with the intention of promoting the culture, the leisure and/or, the work, that only in a secondary or collateral way can be associated, commonly, with the adaptation of the ecosystems in a way that it makes them habitable. This last subject sets the basic condition that directly confronts the main values supporting architecture, that are traditionally associated with the building of the habitable shelter, or of the city as a support of the ways of living of enlarged social groups. Afterwards, it turns to the comprehension of the methodological and object approach that crosses all the subjects of the architectonical conception. At this point, it aims to precise the idea of project of architecture, that should complete and be close to the idea of physical planning, and that wants to be considered independent in theoretical support, objectives and means. Only then is the idea of project of architecture at different scales developed, so as to emphasize the importance of the scales of proximity, that make reference to the world of the architecture of the object, that only wrongly can still continue to be called the leading one, so as it will be shown. In fact, besides a massive pragmatic answer to the satisfaction of the most immediate program needs, the theoretical debate centres around a wide group of concerns that also arouse, in a clear way, the discussion of the condition of landscape in all and any architecture. Away from wanting to invoke a new disciplinary condition, or rehearsing a translation, or an import, for the disciplinary national set of some emergent tendencies in the Anglo-Saxon culture, that are becoming independent from the areas of regional planning, urban experiment or landscape ecology – where affinities can be encountered with planning at landscape scale or landscape urbanism – it aims to acknowledge how the western architecture has developed the city design culture, founded in the previous experiments of the urban morphological analysis and, mostly, after the practical consolidation of the urban project. It interprets how the construction of affinities with other subjects that were founded on a culture based on the earth and environment sciences, or on the physical geography, have evolved in space and time and are currently crossing the inevitability of a permanent and overwhelming transformation of the world we live in, and that no nostalgia or romantic feeling allow to perceive or can disguise. The nature project today will be a part of a completely different program – although non dissociate – and perhaps much narrower, despite the indisputable and expressive abundance of areas predominantly natural, that cover our planet. The expansion of inhabited areas and the intensity of its use by life and production, associated with the awareness of the cultural dimension of a balanced program for the landscape, now with no trace of memories of the past or romantic feeling, arouse the urgent need, that we feel today, to do from all architectures, deliberate exercises of construction of landscape. In fact, this thesis supports the idea that the project of architecture needs to experiment – in every project, of every architecture – a systematic inclusion of inseparability of the world towards each intervention, as a small part and in a specific place that traditionally supports the urbanization, or simply the building. After the incorporation of the spatial context in the project – that was regained after the tabula rasa of the heroic era of the modern times and that has been clarified since the past seventies and eighties – and the assimilation of the importance of the semantic and semiological values that, currently and wisely, take part in the representation of identities, now is time to make an holistic approach to the ecological structures of the landscape. It needs to be incorporated in every act of transformation, catalysing each and every synergy, that is at the immediate reach of each action, measured in direct connection with the universe of relations with its recipients and users. The object of this thesis is clearly the one of showing that the landscape is currently the crucial theme and support of the project of architecture – side by side with the ones that traditionally hold this status, perhaps widening the Vitruvius triad to the satisfaction of the environmental and landscape needs – and also, that it will no longer be possible to make a project without including the environmental dimension reached by the comprehension and incorporation of the complexity of the ecological landscape structures, that in every design exercise will have to be worked at the scale of proximity of the landscape, that now assumes a geographical, strategic and referential value, replacing the idea of representation or image of a territory, that still haunts the commonplace use of de concept of landscape.
