dc.description.abstract“Faced with the cross lies the master”: preliminary results of the excavation of the pantheon of the Order ofSantiago (13th-16th centuries) located in the Sanctuary of Senhor dos Mártires (Alcácer do Sal)The military orders played an indispensable role in the medieval Christian conquest of the Portuguese territory. The Order of Santiago, established in Alcácer do Sal, was instrumental in safeguarding the south border withthe Muslims. The initial findings from the excavation of the Treasury Chapel (13th-16th centuries) at Senhor dosMártires Sanctuary are presented. Commonly accepted methods for excavation and analysis were used. A totalof 36 burials were found in three different areas, identified based on chronological and demographic factors. The funerary ritual, the grave goods, and the analysis of the paleopathology support the idea that the TreasuryChapel was used as a burial place for the knight-monks who were high leaders of the Order of Santiago, servingas a pantheon.pt
