Da Escola em crise: Por que razão a Escola nasceu há 5.000 anos e por que razão terá que renascer

Abstract

Postula-se neste ensaio a existência de duas revoluções que constituíram dois pontos de viragem no evolutivo da Humanidade e que dependeram ambas da criação de conhecimento estruturado para se implementarem. A primeira, simbolizada pela «tabuinha de barro» utilizada literalmente nas primeiras escolas, esteve na origem da «invenção» da Escrita, assim como da Escola, criada justamente para a ensinar. A segunda, simbolizada por um dispositivo, a «tabuinha de silício», que representa por sua vez o Computador hoje omnipre- sente, estará a decorrer neste momento. Esta última, tendo possivelmente sido deixada em estado ignescente pela Revolução Científica iniciada por Galileu, fazendo em todo o caso parte de um movimento universal de emancipação pelo conhecimento, não tem conseguido despertar um grande interesse na Psicologia, nas Ciências da Educação e, de um modo geral, nas ciências sociais e humanas. Ocupadas sobretudo com as manifestações, os sinais ou os sintomas desse mesmo fenómeno, arriscam-se neste momento crítico a passar ao lado das suas causas, perdendo com isso oportunidades únicas de reflexão e de intervenção. Tanto mais necessárias, quanto esta segunda magna revolução está também a criar desconhecimento, desinformação ou ruído — a par de um volume de conhecimentos nunca antes visto na história da Humanidade. Será cada vez mais necessário educar as novas gerações, no sentido de as dotar de ferramentas cognitivas que lhes permitam navegar no oceano quase infinito de «bits» trazido pelas tecnologias de informação; em vez de se perderem ou se deixarem soçobrar pelos superavits criados; ajudando-as, ao mesmo tempo, a evitar os escolhos (em especial os comportamentos de dependência) cau- sados pelas relações entre tais dispositivos e o sistema hedónico do cérebro.

It is postulated in this essay the existence of two ecumenical revolutions that constituted two major turning points in the evolution of humanity, both dependent on the creation of structured knowledge for their implementation. The first, symbolized by the “clay tablet” used literally in the early schools, was the origin of the “invention” of writing, as well as the school, created precisely to teach it. The second, symbolized by a device, the “silicon tablet”, which in turn represents the today’s ubiquitous computer, is underway at this time. Possibly left in a initial state by the Scientific Revolution initiated by Galileo, and in any case part of a universal movement of emancipation through knowledge, it has failed to arouse great interest in psychology, the educational sciences and, in general, in the social and human sciences. Almost obsessed with the mani- festations, signs or symptoms of the same phenomenon, they risk ignoring its causes in this critical moment, thus losing unique opportunities for reflection and intervention. All the more necessary, as this second great revolution is also creating ignorance, misinformation or noise; along with a level of knowledge never before seen in the history of mankind. It will be increasingly necessary to educate the new generations to provide them with cognitive tools to navigate the almost infinite ocean of bits brought about by information technologies, instead of getting lost or overwhelmed by the created surpluses, helping them to avoid the stumbling blocks (especially addictive behaviors) caused by the still unclear relationships between such devices and the brain’s hedonic system.
