The episode of the application of alleged intelligence tests (‘Army Alpha’ and ‘Army Beta’) to US Army recruits, on the eve of leaving for the Great War in Europe, was widely celebrated by main- stream psychology as a major event in its history. The present essay considers, however, such an episode as an example of mythification and mystification of the history of psychology and, in general, of science. More specifically, as an attempt to appropriate the discipline by dogma and prejudice, in the context of the subjugation of scien- tific knowledge (and its search) to fanaticism and fundamentalism, as well as the perverted and fraudulent use of scientific authority to seek to justify and validate more than just dubious social policies, such as racism. |
