O APARECIMENTO DA ENDOCRINOLOGIA EM PORTUGAL NOS MEADOS DO SÉCULO XX

Abstract

Este estudo pretende definir as duas principais etapas que origina- ram o aparecimento da Endocrinologia portuguesa na primeira metade do século XX. Parte-se dos primeiros estudos de histofisiologia das glândulas endócrinas desenvolvidos por insignes médicos e cientistas dos inícios do século XX, definindo-se os principais momentos da es- truturação da Endocrinologia laboratorial e seus cultores. Num segundo momento, mostrar-se-á a transição da Endocrinologia laboratorial para uma Endocrinologia clínica, através da abertura das primeiras consultas desta área médica, precedendo o reconhecimento como especialidade autónoma pela Ordem dos Médicos.

This study aims to define the two main stages that led to the emergence of Portuguese endocrinology in the first half of the 20th century. It starts with the first studies of endocrine gland histophysiology developed by renowned physicians and scientists at the beginning of the 20th century, defining the main moments in the structuring of laboratory endocrinology and its cultors. The transition from lab- oratory endocrinology to clinical endocrinology will be shown in a second moment, through the opening of the first consultations in this medical area, preceding the recognition as an autonomous specialty by the Order of Physicians.
