Os achados do Colégio de Jesus: 260 anos depois, o legado de um jesuíta exilado

Abstract

Em 1759, mesmo em vésperas da expulsão, um Jesuíta chamado António de Vasconcelos quebrou o cerco dos soldados que ocupavam o colégio e escondeu um pequeno tesouro, na face posterior das colunas de um dos altares da igreja. Com essa ousadia, o Jesuíta salvava da destruição um notável conjunto de documentos que inclui desde cartas de Santo Inácio até um manuscrito historiográfico (cuja composição é subitamente interrompida em 1759). O esconderijo permaneceu no silêncio por mais de 250 anos. O nosso estudo consiste em analisar as circunstâncias históricas que estão por trás desta colecção e apresentar o corpus textual, feito de documentos que vão desde o século XVI (a carta mais antiga é de 1542) até ao século XVIII. Tais documentos permitirão reexaminar os primeiros momentos da Província portuguesa da Companhia de Jesus e conhecer melhor a história de uma das instituições que marcaram mais profundamente a vida intelectual europeia no início da era moderna.

In 1759, just on the eve of the expulsion, a Jesuit named António de Vasconcelos broke the siege of the soldiers who occupied the Colégio de Jesus and hid a small treasure on the back of the columns of one of the church’s altars. With this boldness, the Jesuit saved from destruction a remarkable set of documents including letters from Santo Inácio and a historiographic manuscript (whose composition is suddenly interrupted in 1759). The hiding place remained secret for more than 250 years. Our study consists of analyzing the historical circumstances behind this collection and presenting the textual corpus, made up of documents that go from the 16th century (the oldest letter is from 1542) to the 18th century. Such documents will make it possible to reexamine the first moments of the Portuguese Province of the Companhia de Jesus and learn more about the history of one of the institutions that most profoundly marked European intellectual life at the beginning of the modern era.
