Dom Jerónimo Osório e a implantação da Companhia de Jesus em Portugal

Abstract

A História da Companhia de Jesus na Assistência a Portugal, de Francisco Rodrigues S. J., refere abundantemente a figura de Dom Jerónimo Osório, mas não lhe atribui qualquer papel na vinda dos primeiros jesuítas para Portugal. À luz dos resultados mais recentes da investigação sobre Dom Jerónimo Osório, é possível rever aquela posição e estabelecer dados mais objectivos quer sobre a formação do humanista (que chega a Paris em 1534 e ali obtém o grau de Mestre antes de 1538), quer sobre a sua efectiva responsabilidade nas negociações diplomáticas das quais resultou a permissão do Papa Paulo III para a vinda dos Jesuítas. Uma carta do Mestre Jerónimo Osório a Diogo de Gouveia, Principal de Santa Bárbara, está na origem ainda que indirecta, das diligências que levaram São Francisco Xavier à Índia e que, ao mesmo tempo, criaram as condições para que Dom João III se tornasse o primeiro monarca a erigir um Colégio da Companhia (1541-1542).

The name of Jerónimo Osório is recurrent in the História da Companhia de Jesus na Assistência a Portugal [History of the Society of Jesus in the Assistance of Portugal] (1931), by the Jesuit Francisco Rodrigues. Striklingly enough, no role is ascribed there to the Portuguese bishop of Silves and famous XVI century Humanist with respect to the coming of the firt Jesuits to Portugal. Drawing upon the most recent research on Dom Jerónimo Osório we can now reassess the evidence concerning not only his education as a humanist (Arrived in Paris in 1534 and obtained his Maître ès Arts degree before 1538) but also his actual role in the diplomatic negotiations which culminated in Pope Paul III's permission for the mission of the Jesuits in the Portuguese kingdom. A letter by Osório to Diogo de Gouveia, the Principal of Santa Barbara College in Paris, lies at the root, albeit indirectly, of the earliest steps that would culminate both in the sending of Fracis Xavier to the mission in India and Japan. At the same time, that letter created the conditions so that John III would become the first monarch ever to establish a Jesuit College in the world (1541-1542).
