A CONTROVERSIA MÉDICA SOBRE OCLIMA DA MADEIRA NO SEC. XIX: TRANSLOCALIDADE, EPISTEMOLOGIA E HISTÓRIA.

Abstract

As ideias médicas sobre as propriedades preventivas e curativas do clima da Madeira tiveram a sua origem nos trabalhos de médicos britânicos sobre a meteorologia médica do Funchal e desenvolveram-se ao longo de um tempo em que cresciam os interesses britânicos no arquipélago. A meio do século, a controvérsia sobre o clima da Madeira não só possuía uma dimensão europeia e americana, como também influenciava os interesses locais de cariz médico e prato-turístico. Uma rede de discursos médicos e naturalistas intrincou-se com representações literárias românticas e interesses utilitários do emergente fenómeno do turismo. Propõe-se compreender as implicações da recepção local de uma controvérsia cujas origens e desenvolvimentos, exteriores à Madeira, aí se repercutiram. Estas recepção e repercussão têm inspirado discursos contemporâneos que invocam aquele passado para fundamentar uma identidade coeva vocacionada para a indústria do turismo, embora convocando um passa- do ainda mal estudado e mal conhecido. Através do conceito de translocalidade e das ideias de fluxo, mobilidade e lugar, este tex- to procurará contribuir para a investigação so- bre o tema, apontando possibilidades interdis- ciplinares que uma tal abordagem reclamaria.

The medical ideas about the preventive and curative properties of the climate of Madeira had their main origin in the work of British physicians on the medical meteorology of Funchal and developed during the British interests in the archipelago in the first half of 19th century. By the middle of the century, the controversy on the climate of Madeira not only had a Eu- ropean and American dimension but also influenced local interests in the confluen- ce of medicine and proto-tourism. A web of medical and naturalistic discourses has intricately linked with romantic literary representations and utilitarian interests of the emerging tourism phenomenon. lt is proposed to understand the implications at the local levei of a controversy whose origins and developments, externa! to Ma- deira, have reverberated there. These re- ception and repercussio ns have inspired contemporary discourses that invoke that past to support a contemporary identity geared to the tourism industry invoking a past still poorly studied and poorly known. Through the concept of translocality and the notions of flow, mobility and place, this text will seek to contribute to research on the subject pointing out interdisciplinary possibilities that such an approach would require.
