dc.description.abstract | Between 1936 and 1939, Portugal feared the revolutionary con-tagion of Republican Spain whose Popular Front government, viewed as an ally of international communism, represented a dangerous desta-bilizing element for the Portuguese dictatorship. Salazar supported the military uprising against the Madrid government during the Spanish Civil War, turning the Portuguese territory became a Francoist rear-guard. The regime fostered an environment of fear, agitation and anti-communist mobilization to repress the opposition. Salazar’s propa-ganda cynically compared the Spanish bonfire with the Portuguese «haven of peace». | pt |
