A crise económica em Penafiel nos inícios do século XIX pelos livros das décimas de 1800, 1813 e 1821

Abstract

Nos inícios do séc. XIX, Penafiel viveu um período de crise económica, agravada pela conjuntura da Guerra Peninsular e da instabilidade que se seguiu, até à Revolução Liberal. Neste estudo pretendemos analisar o impacto desta crise em Penafiel, com base nos livros das décimas da cidade, relativos aos anos de 1800, 1813 e 1821. Com vista a tal objetivo, esta investigação apresenta três eixos principais de análise: o estudo da décima do maneio enquanto indicador da atividade económica; a análise da décima dos juros e a evolução do mercado creditício; e a aferição da desigualdade nos rendimentos dos penafidelenses, por intermédio do coeficiente de Gini. A análise dos dados terá uma componente comparativa com outras localidades portuguesas.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Penafiel went through a period of economic crisis, aggravated by the conjuncture of the Peninsular War and the instability that followed, until the Liberal Revolution. We intend to analyse the impact of this crisis in Penafiel, throughout the city’s tax books of décimas (royal tithe), from 1800, 1813 and 1821. With this objective in mind, this investigation presents three main axes of analysis: the study of the décima do maneio (professions), as an indicator of economic activity; the analysis of the décima dos juros (interests) and the evolution of credit market; and the measurement of inequality in the income of Penafiel’s population, through the Gini coefficient. The data analysis will have a comparative component with other Portuguese locations.
