This investigation concentrates on the study of wind bands, particularly those of four Portuguese municipalities, during the third quarter of the twentieth century, a period that has unexpectedly been neglected by academic investigation, if we take into account the landmarks and events that occurred in that period, particularly relevant to the wind bands. It aims at characterizing those musical groups from a historical and musicological point of view. The following phenomena are analyzed and interpreted: availability of human resources, financial situation, institutional organization, instrumental constitution, type of musical education ministered to apprentices and degree of social acceptance. The type of musical repertoire, the spaces of performance and the main events related to the activity of the bands are not neglected, although they are secondary purposes. A historical frame of the Portuguese wind bands until the 1980’s is presented here as there is a scarcity of historical studies of these bands in Portugal. This investigation also aims at contributing to the knowledge, consciousness and understanding of the wind bands as a sociomusical process, as well as reducing the existing gap in the researches concerning this type of musical bands and other themes in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, History and Anthropology. The methodological approach involved bibliographic research, press article collections, and file research. This research involved the participation of thirty-four interviewed individuals from the wind bands active in the decades mentioned above. A case study about the sixteen wind bands of the municipalities of Cinfães, Águeda, Fundão and Oeiras was included. From the analysis of the collected data, we can conclude that the phenomena observed had an influence on the activity of the wind bands although its impact was diverse in the studied bands. While the financial difficulties, the inadequate methods of teaching used (and consequently deficient musical educational of musicians), the exclusivity of men and their high age level link the generality of the studied wind bands, others, however, separate them. For example, the number of musicians in the bands, the degree of local acceptance. The type of musical repertoire performed, the organization and structure of the bands and the space of performance. Depending on the regions, the period considered was of stagnation or decay for the wind bands. Because of the almost total absence of studies about this subject, this study projects a new light on these groups in particular during the temporal period and geographical space referred.
