Crises e mudanças na democracia ateniense: A atuação de Terâmenes entre oportunismo, legalismo e a ‘terceira via’

Abstract

Este texto examina a atuação política do ateniense Terâmenes conforme narrada por Tucídides, Xenofonte, Lísias e pela Constituição dos Atenienses atribuída a Aristóteles, a fim de mapear as linhas- -mestras que convergiram para tornar Terâmenes paradigmático para o pensamento político grego antigo. As quatro fontes foram selecionadas por serem as cronologicamente mais próximas da personagem dentre as supérstites e, sobretudo, porque condicionaram a recepção de sua trajetória por autores posteriores. O exame almeja pôr em evidência os traços da personagem que fomentaram sua identificação como quintessência do vira-casaca, por um lado, ou do firme legalista, por outro, bem como as implicações dessa postura para a configuração da democracia ateniense no último quarto do século V a.C.

This text examines the political performance of Theramenes of Athens as narrated by Thucydides, Xenophon, Lysias and the Constitution of the Athenians attributed to Aristotle, so as to map the guidelines that converged to make Theramenes paradigmatic for the ancient Greek political thought. The four sources were selected since they were the chronologically closest to the character among the remaining sources and, above all, because they conditioned the reception of his trajectory by later authors. The paper aims to highlight the features of the character that fostered his identification as a quintessence of the turncoat, on the one hand, or of the firm legalist, on the other, as well as the implications of this posture for the configuration of Athenian democracy in the last quarter of the fifth century BC.
