Little is known about Africans and Afro-descendants who lived in Portugal in the period between the end of slavery and the independence of Portuguese colonies in Africa. In this research notes, I present a brief overview of the scholarship on the African presence in Portugal in historical perspective, to highlight the gap that remains in relation to the abovementioned period. Then, I identify printed sources and unforeseen paths on the “imperial archive” to shed light on the inhabitants, naturals and nationals of African origin in the country and, in particular, in Lisbon. I conclude that a social history of Black lives in the imperial metropolis is not yet written and requires heuristic and methodological creativity. It may also contribute to demystify the equivocal homology between African/Black and immigrant/foreigner in Portuguese society. |
