Biography
J. Norberto Pires has a degree in Physics Engineering, a branch of Instrumentation (1991) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (1999). He did post-doc in Automatic Control (1999-2000, Lund, Sweden) and was in several universities as guest scientist.
He is the author of several hundred scientific and technical papers published in prestigious journals and conferences, 3 books in English edited by Springer, 31 book in Portuguese, 5 editions, edited by LIDEL, several chapters in books, more than 500 technical articles – scientific, director of the Robotics Magazine (the only Portuguese Robotics magazine). He’s releasing 2 new books in Portuguese, also edited by LIDEL.
It has a regular presence in the media with opinion columns and radio programs.
He was the President of the Portuguese Robotics Society, President the Portuguese Association for Automatic Control, the President of the Regional Coordination and Development Committee of the Center Region of Portugal, President of the Investment Committee JESSICA Holding Fund Portugal, member of the National Council of Science and Technology, member of the National Council of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, among other positions.
In mid-2007 he assumed the Presidency of the Board of Directors of iParque, Science and Technology Park of Coimbra, a position he held until the end of 2011, in charge of a small but very dedicated team, with which he planned, obtained financing and built this important business location in Coimbra. The medium- and long-term strategy was based on the quality of space, the VINCI and TESLA buildings, the strong link to the UC and a very efficient collection of services that allowed unattractive investment and knowledge-based business location.
He is currently Associate Professor with “Agregação” of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Coimbra.
