Biography
Carla Rodrigues holds a PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems (MIT-Portugal Program, University of Coimbra, 2016), a Master in Energy for Sustainability with focus in Energy in Buildings and Urban Environment (University of Coimbra, 2013), and a first degree in Architecture by the University of Coimbra (2008). She is currently a postdoctoral research associate working on several R&D projects at Center for Industrial Ecology (within ADAI-LAETA), focusing on extended life-cycle assessment approaches for several products and systems. I am also an Invited Assistant Professor of Circular Economy at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. I was awarded with a doctoral scholarship from the MPP, granted to the eight best students enrolled each year in the program. During my PhD I was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for one year, developing a streamlined model for life-cycle assessment to reduce the effort and time of a full LCA, while maintaining the robustness and accuracy of the results. This work was part of a research project at the Materials Systems Laboratory (MSL) and the Concrete Sustainability Hub, where they developed the Building-Attribute-to-Impact Algorithm (BAIA) to streamline LCA of buildings. She has been involved in several national and international projects, as well as preparing applications for research funding in various national and international calls (with a rate of acceptance of about 60%). Two research projects were prepared and recommended for funding following the methodological approach developed in my doctoral thesis. She has also been invited for several workshops and conferences. My management activities include support in the academic management of postgraduate courses. I am a member of the Academic and Pedagogical Affairs Committee at the Energy for Sustainability Initiative (research and advanced training programs at University of Coimbra, including the Energy for Sustainability Master Program and the Sustainable Energy Systems Doctoral Program). My research activities also include project management (including writing research proposals for national and international calls), peer-review for international journals and writing scientific articles. I am also a guest editor of a special issue in an international peer reviewed journal (IF: 3.251). I am currently co-supervising three PhD students (one in Environmental Engineering, expected to finish this year, and two in Sustainable Energy Systems) and one master student in Environmental Engineering (expected to finish this year). Additionally, I am also currently co-supervising three research fellows in two research projects in collaboration with several companies. She has also been an evaluator in several PhD and MSc thesis committees.
