Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) has high prevalence world-wide and increasing mortality observed in Portuguese population [1]. Chemotherapy remains at the forefront of CRC treatment, especially in advanced cases, but has changed little in the past decades. Most of the patients are older than 50 years of age, but the disease is more aggressive in patients that are diagnosed at younger ages. The high drug doses necessary to achieve desired outcomes lead to both acute and long-term side-effects. Considerable number of CRC patients are nonresponsive to the available therapeutics, and the main death cause remains distant metastasis and drug resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new, safer and more efficient therapeutics for CRC. Nanomedicine has emerged as a promising approach to improve therapeutic outcomes and reduce side-effects.
