Description

Abstract
One of the major challenges Portugal is facing, which will be addressed within the next Horizon 2020 research funding programmes and co-joint initiatives between industry and academia, is the competitiveness of the country in global markets. This issue is critical for Portugal, as the economy is highly dependent on export-companies. The country's growth is mainly based on its success in international markets. Manufacturing is a sector where competitiveness is particularly important. With the elimination of economic barriers to global trade, the reduction in transport costs and the IT communication support, manufacturing is highly competitive, gravitating towards countries with low overall costs. There is an increased competition from emerging economies, low production costs in developing countries, and shortage of raw materials, so manufacturing companies in Portugal are under considerable strain. All European industry is facing the same challenges. A number of areas have been identified for special focus in the first Horizon 2020 Work Programme and industrial leadership is one of them. Various other factors are driving change in the manufacturing sector: new market and social needs, rapid advances in technology and science, and the need for energy and resource efficiency. To address these challenges, companies need to lead in bringing innovative products and services to global markets. Investing in the development of an added-value manufacturing industry is a possible answer to address these challenges, comprising an integrated system enclosing design and operating systems, as well production and distribution activities, i.e., the whole cycle of production, distribution and end-of-life treatment of goods and products/services, applying a customer/user driven innovation system. Instead of competing primarily on costs, added-value manufacturing delivers value through product/service innovation, creating excellence in process, achieving high brand recognition and/or contributing for sustainability in society. It applies leading-edge scientific knowledge for the conception of products, processes and associated services allowing sustainable growth and high economic value. CDRSP stated mission is to contribute to the advancement of science and technology, leading to more suitable, effective and efficient products, materials and processes helping to generate added-value for the industry and promoting awareness in society of the role and importance of rapid and sustainable product development. Since its establishment in 2007, the Centre has grown rapidly evolving to an international leading research centre in the field.
