On the morning of 15 December 2009, the Village of Agualva located on the northern coast of Terceira Island from the Açores archipelago, suffered a severe flash flood caused by a short but intense precipitation. The village lies at the bottom of Agualva watershed, with the majority of buildings and roads situated near the natural watercourse, which together with the various existing bridges dramatically decreases the cross section of the water flow. During this flood many areas were inaccessible due to the excess of water on the roads and bridge collapses. After this event a contention basin was projected and constructed on the Village of Agualva, in order to store some volume of water, as well as to reduce the content of suspended solids and organic matter, trying to prevent or at least attenuate the damage caused by future floods. The goal of this work was to analyze the impact of the construction of a contention basin on the watershed of Agualva. For this two situations have been studied, the first one was without and the second with contention basin. This study was performed using the software Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) version 5.0, developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), testing different precipitation events. With this study it is concluded that the contention basin is dimensioned with a primary purpose of retaining large solids such as rocks, sludge and tree trunks, leaving the capacity of flow peak reduction on the background. The construction of the contention basin along with the channel in the stream does not contribute significantly to reduce the heights of water on the roads.pt
