Background: Several studies have shown a high prevalence of mental health disorders among health university students, with anxiety being one of the most important. However, there are few studies focusing on relevant factors for anxiety development in this population. The main objective of this study was to characterize factors that influence the anxiety levels of health university students in Coimbra.Materials and methods: We conducted an observational study, using an online, confidential, anonymous, of voluntary self-filling questionnaire. The questionnaire included five sections: sociodemographic characteristics, questions related to factors to study, Anxiety Subscale of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A), family APGAR and Academic Procrastination Scale. It was shared with students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) and of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra (FFUC).Results: In a representative sample of 351 responses, 200 medical students and 151 pharmacy students, we identified: female gender, first years of attendance at the course, lower number of sleep hours during the school period and consideration of lack of time for leisure activities or with the family as anxiogenic factors. Medical students attend more extracurricular activities, study in a higher percentage in the course they chose as the first option when entering higher education and are less anxious when compared to Pharmacy students. The variables: age (p = 0.030), gender (p = 0.054), year of attendance (p = 0.174), with whom they live during the school period (p = 0.409), approximate number of sleep hours per night during the school period (p = 0.608), lack of time for leisure activities or with the family (p = 0.268), family functionality (p = 0.442) and Academic Procrastination Scale score (p = 0.935) did not show statistically significant differences between students from Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy. Discussion: The high levels of anxiety in the first years of the course can be explained by: students' doubts about integration in the academic environment, higher levels of demand and changes in lifestyle. Coping strategies can help to decrease anxiety levels over the course, which explains considering lack of time for leisure activities or with the family and the lower number of sleep hours as anxiogenic factors. The higher percentage of students attending the course that they chose as the first option among medical students may be related to a better ability to deal with anxiety, due to the previous path that had to be overcome. Social and individual issues may also be associated. These results must be interpreted in the light of previous disparate results. Conclusion: The identification of anxiety disorders, allowing for timely intervention and creating more appropriate lifestyle options can decrease the risk of future health professionals acquiring more severe clinical conditions. Also, the adequacy of the timetable and teaching load can help to reduce anxiety levels. It is imperative to raise the student community's awareness of mental health issues and factors that influence them.eng
