Title: | Agenesia Unilateral dos Nervos Coclear e Facial – Caso Clínico | Other Titles: | Unilateral agenesis of the choclear and facial nerves - case report | Authors: | Silva, Martim de Freitas Porto Dinis da | Orientador: | Fernandes, Isa Éloi Paiva, Sofia Margarida Marques |
We present the case of a three-year-old male child, referred from the maternity hospital Bissaya Barreto after having passed the universal neonatal hearing screening (RANU) test, but with a paternal notion of interauricular asymmetry, with no apparent repercussions on development, absence of family history deafness or other known risk factors. After consulting an ENT doctor, the genetic study was carried out, but was inconclusive. It should be noted that no changes were found after a physical examination performed by the ENT doctor. Of the complementary exams performed, the result of the auditory evoked potentials of the brain stem (PEATC) stands out, normal tracing on the left and no response on the right. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging of the skull revealed incomplete division of the eighth right cranial nerve, identifying vestibular divisions in the posterior quadrants, but not defining the cochlear nerve. In children with sensorineural deafness, the etiological and imaging diagnosis becomes essential for adequate therapeutic guidance.
