The Facebook Addiction in Portuguese Young Adults: The influence ofsociodemografic factors, family communication and self differentiationAbstract: The increasing use of social networking sites them among the most executed online activities. Facebook, in particular, is gaining more and more users each day. Studies have shown that, for some individuals, using Facebook can become an additive behaviour online. In this sense, the main objective of the present research is to evaluate the influence of sociodemografic factors (e.g., gender, age), individual (self differentiation) and family (family communication with both parents) in addiction to Facebook in young Portuguese adults (from 18 to 30 years). For this purpose, a sample of 403 participants was collected and a protocol was applied with several instruments (e.g., COMPA, BSI, DSI-R, BFAS). The results showed that individuals: (1) female, (2) between the ages of 24 and 30 years, (3) with low self differentiation, (4) physical or emotion distance from significant others (emotional cut-off) and (5) a negative communication pattern with their parents have greater addiction to Facebook. Other psychopathological indicators were also analysed (depression, anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity) revealed influence in this type of addiction. It is expected that this study may contribute to the online addition’s field of investigation and that it may have repercussions in the field of prevention and clinical intervention.Key Words: Social Networking Sites; Facebook; Facebook addiction; youngadults; family communication; self differentiation.eng
