The current dissertation aims to investigate de role of religion in the resolution of conflicts and peacebuilding, in order to provide a clear insight about the influence of this matter in the past, present and future. For this purpose, an extended analysis of literature has been performed with the view to develop a systematic review on the mentioned subject. The conflict between Israel and Palestine was used as a case study to demonstrate the impact of religion in conflicts, how relevant can it be if used as tool to achieve peace and what is the best approach for this exact purpose. Galtung’s peace theory consists of an interpretation of the peace potential that each religion has. The current dissertation uses this theory as an additional tool to help analyse and understand research. In addition, the five dimensions of religion developed by Frazer and Owen are also used as a conceptual framework to allow a clear insight on the role of religion in the peacebuilding process. The following three dimensions have a deeper role in the context of the current investigation: “religion as an institution”, “religion as a set of symbols and practices” and “religion as a community”.The current literature review provides an overview associated with the induction of religion in the peacebuilding process. The use of dimensions of Frazer and Owen, and the acknowledgement that religion has different expressions depending on specific contexts, were considered essential overcome the mentioned conflicts. The co-operation between national governments and religion leaders is considered also one of the main keys to achieve peace. Therefore, it is necessary to review and develop new laws to promote solidarity between religion leaders and stimulate the interfaith dialogue.
