Since the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak in China, It is expected that India the second most populated country in the world will take the lead in terms of infections and deaths caused by this pandemic. The year 2020 has seen an unexpected 120% increase in demand for invasive respiratory ventilators, necessary life-support equipment when treating critical-state patients. Well established ventilator companies have not anticipated this type of market growth, resulting in a massive world-wide shortage for this precious medical device. The main objective of the work presented is the development of an accessible, low-cost, “pandemic-grade” ventilator’s manifold component, defined as: “[A pipe or chamber branching into several other openings]” The intention is to lower the cost of traditional ventilators, and to increase the compatibility with off-the-shelf products, easily available during a pandemic crisis. The theory of mechanical ventilation is based upon a series of air channels upon which the manifold incorporates all the electronics and mechanical hardware needed, coming together as one functional product, capable of supplying Oxygen and to save a human life.An intensive study was made around patient-machine topologies, mechanical functioning principle, fluid dynamics and methods of ventilator manufacturing and material-science, resulting in a selected architectural solution for prototyping and testing, The heart of this life-saving machine is electronically monitored and mechanically composed of valves, sensors, manifolds, and various fittings. This work mainly focuses on the development of a ventilator’s manifold geometry, compatible with off-the-shelf products available during a pandemic emergency. The ventilation principles studied and learned from the development of “Project_Atena” (The first Portuguese Mechanical Invasive Ventilator) were tested, proven, and used as a reference during the study and work done for this master’s degree thesis. In the end, a new architecture has been conceived to build such a device, being capable of providing essential results on the manufacturability, range of materials, components, and manufacturing techniques world-wide. As a last resort scenario, without an available vaccine or expensive CE certified medical equipment, this study shines a light on an affordable solution for everyone in need.
