Although these pointed out as the main functions, platelets also intervene in the progression of cancer by favoring the proliferation and metastasis of tumor cells. The interaction of platelets with tumor cells inspired the scientific community to develop systems for the transport of therapeutic agents (drugs and nucleic acids) in a context of targeted therapy. Native platelets and nanoparticles coated with platelet cytoplasmic membrane (biomimetic systems) have been shown to behave as a targeted therapy and, consequently, limit non-specific bonds responsible for the numerous side effects of conventional therapy. In addition, their interest arose as a source of biomarkers for early diagnosis and/or monitoring of cancer therapy, because platelets present a dynamic mRNA in response to tumor cell stimuli. In this review, I intend to present the various published studies that support the hypothesis of platelets as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in the field of oncology.Platelets play a critical role in hemostasis and tissue repair.
