Anxiety is an heterogeneous mental illness that can be disabling for the human being and that, as such, involves society in which concerns not only the costs associated with it but also the interaction the patient develops with society itself. Several neurochemical mechanisms mediated by neurotransmitters, in which GABA and 5-HT stand out, are involved in anxiety. Anxiety disturbances are the most prevailing psychiatric disorders in Portugal. As a mental disorder, associated to specific symptoms, it is identified by well defined diagnosis criteria and responds to pharmacological treatment. In this pathology the use of drugs is common, and it is in this context that the consumption of anxiety controllers has become a complex public health problem nowadays, namely the consumption of benzodiazepines and antidepressants, which are the most used. Benzodiazepines are used in the short term symptomatic, and, therefore, shouldn’t be used for long periods of time. Alprazolam and lorazepam are the most consumed benzodiazepines in Portugal. As far as the antidepressants are concerned, they are used in long term treatments and sertraline is the one which presents a wider consumption in our country. Therapy using medicinal plants, specially the use of Valeriana officinalis, offers an advantageous, safe alternative, with benefits, when compared to the allopathic therapeutic. The pharmacist, as a medicine expert and public health agent, has an important role in the anxiety therapeutic, and should not only promote the adequate and rational use of drugs, but also monitor its safety and effectiveness.
