The daily use of sunprotecting measures is of extreme importance to prevent the loss of health conditions provoked by the UV radiations. Sunscreens are cosmetic products constituted by UV filters as active compounds, which are responsible for the absorption or reflexion of the UV rays that reach the skin surface. Over time, together with the abundant research in the area, sunscreens underwent a major process of innovation, so that their effectiveness and safety have been improved. In the context of a new era of emerging formulation technologies, nanosystems began to be integrated into sunscreen formulations with the function of carrying UV filters, giving rise to nanosunscreens. These nanoformulations have been surpassing difficulties and obstacles found in conventional sunscreens. The nanosystems used for the formulation of sunscreens include nanoemulsions, liposomes and ultra deformable vesicles, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, polymeric nanoparticles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, nanocrystals and sunspheres. Such nanostructures allow for several recognized benefits, as higher UV filters adhesion and permanence on the skin surface layers, higher stability and solubility of the constituents of the solar formulation, inferior white and opaque residue caused by inorganic UV filters, superior water resistance of UV filters, and increased bioavailability of natural antioxidants with photoprotective activity. However, many doubts remain regarding the possible risks of nanosunscreens to human health and the environment arising from their use. Although regulatory authorities and industries act to ensure the sunscreens safety reaching the market, further investigation and discussion is essential on this topic of major interest. |
