One of the greatest difficulties of Forensic Anthropology is the estimation of age at death in adults over 30 years. The skull is characterized by the anatomical zone with more relevance, since it supports the main functions of the human body. Moreover, it is also relatively easy to study, being usually the first part of body to be skeletonized, and one of the most frequent findings in forensic anthropology. The aims of this study are to (1) identify the degenerative changes that occur in the skull, (2) to attempt a quantitative evaluation of these alterations and to verify their correlation with the age group, (3) to verify the assertiveness of these indicators in the estimation of the age group. A total of 452 skulls were analyzed, of which 302 were from the 21st Century Identified Skeletal Collection and 150 from the Coimbra Identified Skeletal Collection. Each skull was assessed individually by analyzing the following characteristics: weight, depression in the canine fossae, cranial bone transparency, osteoarthrosis in the cranial joints, biparietal thinning, sincipital T and degree of obliteration of the sutures. This research intends to evaluate the effectiveness of the degenerative changes of the skull for the estimation of age in adults, which can be an asset for the area of Forensic Anthropology. The majority of the indicators studied showed a moderate relation with the age, being outstanding the alveolar resorption and the degree of osteoarthrosis observed in the occipital condyles. On the other hand, the depth of the canine fossae, transparency of the cranial bones, biparietal thinning and sincipital T are the variables that do not present significant relationship with age.So far, this is the first study about these indicators which need further studies in other identified osteological collections or even in imaging databases.
