It is proven in the literature that the greatest of fatigue failures is initiated in places of concentration of stresses found on the surfaces of the components. A good way to try to delay this effect is to introduce residual compression stresses through a cold surface treatment called shot peening. This methodology results in local compression stresses, which provide a resistance to initiation and propagation of the crack, leading to an increase in fatigue life. The shot peening process has to be done carefully so that the introduced residual stresses overlap with the negative effect increase of the roughness and consequent increase stress concentration in the surface. In this dissertation the bombardment of four different spheres, two of glass (Size 8 and AGB35) and two of steel (S110 and S170) in circular test pieces AA7475-T7351 were studied. Each of these methods involves different blasting parameters because the material and the diameter are different from each other. Fatigue tests were performed in three-point cyclic bending. This investigation crosses the S-N curve data of the tests with the changes that this procedure causes to the structure (microstructure, surface morphology, residual stresses, micro and nanodurances and analysis of fracture surfaces).Through the S-N curves it was found that only the treatment with the Size 8 particle gave a slight improvement throughout the fatigue life while the other treatments only manifested better for short lives. This lack of improvement is due to an incorrect choice of shot peening parameters as well as stress relieving effect during the tests.eng
