Condeixa-a-Nova e as suas instituições de assistência social (1900-1945)

Abstract

Esta dissertação de mestrado, intitulada Condeixa-a-Nova e as suas instituições de assistência social (1900-1945) foi realizada no âmbito do 2º ciclo em História Contemporânea, tendo sido orientada pela Professora Doutora Maria Antónia Lopes. A seleção do território em estudo, o concelho de Condeixa-a-Nova, explica-se por razões afetivas e pelo facto de conhecer bem a região, pois nasci e fui criado em Bruscos, aldeia nele inserida. É meu objetivo aprofundar os conhecimentos sobre este município durante as quatro primeiras décadas do século XX, porque o estudo sobre a assistência social neste concelho está por fazer. O propósito inicial era estudar a fundação da Santa Casa da Misericórdia, que data da centúria passada, uma vez que existe uma lacuna na historiografia portuguesa em torno daquelas que foram fundadas no século XX. Sucede que quando comecei a realizar a investigação sobre aquela instituição deparei-me com o vínculo que mantinha com o Hospital Municipal D. Ana Laboreiro D`Eça. Decidi então alargar o âmbito da investigação e incluir também a fundação do hospital. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo estudar as instituições de assistência social em Condeixa-a-Nova entre 1900 e 1945. Num primeiro momento, apresenta-se uma síntese da assistência social em Portugal no início do século XX. Neste capítulo traça-se um enquadramento histórico das leis, organismos, acontecimentos e evolução em torno do modelo assistencial português desde o final da Monarquia Constitucional até ao início do Estado Novo. Seguidamente, caracterizam-se a população e as principais atividades económicas e de serviços existentes em Condeixa-a-Nova nas primeiras quatro décadas do século XX. No terceiro capítulo aborda-se a ação da Câmara Municipal no que respeita à higiene pública e à assistência médica antes da fundação do Hospital Municipal D. Ana Laboreiro D`Eça e da Santa Casa da Misericórdia. No capítulo dedicado ao hospital, analisam-se a construção do edifício hospitalar, os serviços facultados às pessoas e procede-se ainda a um esboço sociológico dos seus internados. O segmento dedicado à Santa Casa, pretende dar a conhecer as pessoas que a integraram e as ações por ela desenvolvidas, nomeadamente o projeto da Sopa dos Pobres.

This master's thesis, titled Condeixa-a-Nova and its social assistance institutions (1900-1945) was carried out within the framework of the 2nd cycle in Contemporary History, and was guided by Professor Maria Antónia Lopes.The selection of the territory under study, the county of Condeixa-a-Nova, is explained by affective reasons and by the fact that I know the region well, since I was born and raised in Bruscos, a village in it. It is my goal to deepen the knowledge about this municipality during the first four decades of the twentieth century, because the study on social assistance in this county has yet to be done. The initial purpose was to study the founding of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, dating from the last century, since there is a gap in Portuguese historiography around those that were founded in the twentieth century. It so happens that when I began to carry out the research on that institution, I came across the bond I had with the Municipal Hospital D. Ana Laboreiro D`Eça. I then decided to widen the scope of the investigation and also to include the hospital's foundation.This dissertation aims to study the social assistance institutions in Condeixa-a-Nova, between 1900 and 1945. At first, we present a synthesis of the social assistance in Portugal at the beginning of the 20th century.In this chapter, a historical framework of the laws, organisms, events and evolution around the Portuguese care model is drawn from the end of the Constitutional Monarchy to the beginning of the Estado Novo. Next, we describe the population and services that existed in Condeixa-a-Nova in the first four decades of the twentieth century. On the third chapter it is made a presentation of the hygiene measures and medical care that the City Council offers the population before the foundation of the Municipal Hospital D. Ana Laboreiro D`Eça and Holy House of Mercy. In the chapter dedicated to the hospital, we analyse the construction of the hospital building, the services provided to the people and proceed to a sociological outline of their boarding schools. The segment dedicated to the Holy House aims to the knowledge of the people who integrated it and the actions it developed, namely the Soup of the Poor project.
