Today work is an activity that is highly time consuming in our lives, taking a significant slice of our day. Some people love their work whereas others look at tasks as negative and compulsory. It is important then to know what are the ingredients that make the ideal work. Despite many studies focus on work, ideal work is rarely studied. The search for the ideal job is present throughout our working life and it becomes increasingly important to consider whether it corresponds or not to the decent work elements as thought and developed by the International Labour Organization in 1999. The objective of this research is to study the social representation of the ideal work in a sample of Portuguese participants and to verify to which extent it corresponds to the seven dimensions of decent work that emerged in previous studies that configure the subjective experience of workers. A questionnaire was applied to a Portuguese sample (N = 2735) and the main results indicate that the central core of the social representation of ideal work is formed by five words: remuneration, satisfaction, success, respect and interest. These results compared with the decent work elements as perceived by workers cover partially all of them. This coverage means people seems to be tuned with the decent work concept, although each element of this construct is not completely described by the central core of social representation. In spite of that, the overall results reinforce the statement made by the International Labour Organization that decent work corresponds to the aspirations of people regarding their working life. Therefore, the decent work can keep being an ideal we strive for with its legitimacy strengthened.
