The eighteenth century in Portugal was one of the most important historical periods in terms of artistic production, a consequence of the great wealth generated by the gold and the diamonds that came from Brazilian territories, which allowed a climate of great economic relief.Under the reign of King John V, known as ‘the Magnanimous' (Portuguese: Dom João V, o Magnânimo), many changes occurred in the most varied fields of the Portuguese life and it soon became evident in the arts. In a period of great opulence, ruled by a royal policy that aggrandized the monarch and his kingdom, ordering several works, from paintings to architecture, the great ones of the kingdom also enjoyed this colossal abundance, mimicking the sovereign.D. Tomás de Almeida was one of the nobles who followed the example of Johannine politics. As a noble and great lord of the Church, D. Tomás had his ecclesiastical trajectory marked by the various works of art that he ordered, such as the palace of Santo Antão do Tojal and its gardens, mentioned in this thesis.Combining art and nature, fruit of his erudition, the then patriarch of Lisbon builds a noble residence where the green spaces are carefully thought out and elaborated, creating a place of leisure and delight for his patron but also for the distinguished guests he received, including the royal family. In this thesis, we intend to learn more about these garden spaces, which are totally disfigured and embezzled from their original beauty, trying to understand their composition, importance in the palace and relation/connection to eighteenth-century gardens.que seguiu o exemplo da política joanina.
