Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a estrutura fatorial e a fiabilidade da escala The Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes – MTUAS (Rosen et al., 2013), validando a sua versão portuguesa (MTUAS-PA).
The aim of this study is to analyze and evaluate the factorial structure and reliability of The Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes scale– MTUAS (Rosen et al., 2013) and validate its portuguese version in a population of adults (MTUAS-PA). The purpose of the MTUAS-PA is to analyze the Usage and Attitudes towards the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) among portuguese young adults and observe how the results obtained are similar or different from those of the adult population studied by Rosen. To establish a comparative analysis between both studies, we used a Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and an analysis of the reliability of the scale. The EFA was performed on a sample of 300 subjects, of whom 136 were male (45.3 %) and 164 were female (54.7 %), with ages between 20 and 59 years (M= 34.75; SD= 13.16). The results show significant differences in age (t (298)= 3.38, p < .05), with males (M= 37.52, SD= 13.27) being slightly older than females (M= 32.45, SD= 12.66).In EFA, the subscale Use of ICT is constituted by 10 dimensions, namely, Facebook (F1, 5 items); Advanced use of mobile phone (F2, 9 items); E-mail (F3, 4 items); Internet search (F4, 7 items); Games (F5, 3 items); Share on Facebook (F6, 3 items); Basic use of mobile phone (F7, 4 items); Entertainment on the computer/TV (F8, 3 items); Facebook friendships (F9, 10 items); Access places (F10, 2 items). The Attitudes towards ICT subscale consists of 4 dimensions: Positive attitudes (F1, 4 items), Preference for task switch (F2, 4 items), Anxiety/Dependence (F3, 4 items) and Negative attitudes F4, 3 itens). The CFA sample consists of 316 subjects aged between 20 and 59 years. The mean age of the subjects is 35.09 (SD = 12.75) and 54.7% (n = 173) belong to the female gender and 45.3% (n = 143) belong to the male gender. The chi square test (χ2) indicated that there are significant gender differences in the age group (χ2 (3, 316) = 9.45, p <.05). After withdrawing an item and outliers, it was concluded that the CFA's factorial structure was as follows: Facebook (F1, 5 items); Advanced Mobile Phone Use (F2, 9 items); Email (F3, 4 items); Internet search (F4, 7 items); Games (F5, 3 items); Share on Facebook (F6, 3 items); Basic Phone Use (F7, 4 items); Entertainment on the computer/TV (F8, 3 items); Facebook friendships (F9, 2 items); Access Places (F10, 2 items). The factor structure obtained in the MTUAS-PA in both subscales is close enough to the factor structure obtained by Rosen and collaborators (2013a) in the MTUAS.The internal consistency values obtained for the subscale Usage were acceptable to excellent (.961≤ α> .701) and those of the Attitudes subscale were questionable to acceptable (.798≤ α> .678). For the subscale Usage it was verified that the highest correlations were observed between F8 (PC / TV Entertainment) and F4 (Internet Search) (r = 1,171, p <.01) and F8 and F2 (Advanced use of the mobile phone) (r = 1.052, p <.01). In the Attitudes subscale, the highest and most significant correlation was between the Positive Attitudes and Anxiety/Dependence factors (r = .518, p <.01).
