Abstract: Objetive. Mindful parenting is characterized by the application of the concepts, practices and principles of mindfulness to the relationships and interactions between parents and children. Despite the growing number of studies on this form of parenting, we still know very little about the predictive role of the sociocultural context in which the parent-child relationship is embedded. Thus, the main goal of the present study is to explore the role of the sociocultural context in mindful parenting, such as sociodemographic (e.g., parent’s sex; education levels) and work-related characteristics (e.g., work schedule, work-family conflict), social support networks (e.g., help in domestic tasks) and the marital relation (e.g., sharing of parental responsibilities with the spouse) in the different dimensions of mindful parenting.Design and methods. The sample included 410 parents of children and adolescents between 1 and 19 years of age who responded to a sociodemographic questionnaire and to the self-reported measures of the Work-Family Conflict and Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting.Results. In order to test the role of the sociodemographic and contextual variables in the various dimensions of mindful parenting, multiple linear regressions were performed. Concerning sociodemographic variables, higher education levels were significantly associated with higher levels of nonjudgmental acceptance of parental functioning and female gender was associated with higher levels of emotional awareness of the child. Concerning the work context, higher levels of work-family conflict were associated with lower levels of nonjudgmental acceptance of parental functioning, listening with full attention, emotional awareness of the child and self-regulation in parenting. A flexible work schedule was also associated with higher levels of nonjudgmental acceptance of parental functioning. Lastly, the existence of help with domestic tasks and sharing parental responsibility tasks with the partner were both associated with higher levels of self-regulation in parenting.Conclusions. The results suggest that variables such as parent’s sex, education levels, work schedule, social support network, responsibility sharing and work-family conflict seem to play an important role in the dimensions of mindful parenting.
