The present research, inscribed in the line of Ancient World, in Classical Studies, is based on a study of the figure and the myth of Atalanta.Duly framed in its time and context in which it took form, it is our main goal to analyze the several treatments to which the myth was subject. We intend to examine the literary and iconographic sources, to review the existent studies and to look for the character's involvement and its characterization by the different authors, in the several scenes in which it refers: in the Calydonian boar hunt, in the funeral games in honor of Pelias, in the Argonautic and finally, in the athletic test against Hippomenes, whose intention was an eternal escape to the bonds of marriage. Therefore, our study focuses on an analysis of the figure of Atalanta from a literary and cultural point of view, approaching the representation of the myth in Greek vases, Etruscan mirrors, and Roman wall-painting, focusing also on Western art, namely in glyptic art, in painting and in the cinematographic world.Taking into consideration some of the problems raised by the myth of Atalanta, we divide our work in five major questions, with which we can define the general lines of the dissertation, organized in two parts: Who was Atalanta? What information does ancient literary and artistic sources offer us? To what extent did Atalanta challenge the norms and customs prevailing in the culture of ancient Greece? How does art treats this ancient myth? How did the cinema take advantage of the figure of Atalanta? These are our objectives, the main questions that we will try to answer in the course of this work. This Greek girl, originally from Arcadia or Boeotia, was exposed shortly after her birth, was rescued by a bear, who nursed her, and was raised by hunters, later to become a follower of the goddess of the wilderness, Artemis, Hunting and choosing the woods as her home. She participates in the expedition of the Argonauts, in the calydonian boar hunt and in the funeral games in honor of Pelias. Despite all these culturally masculine activities, Atalanta was known for her rejection of marriage and for the running competition she imposed as a way of remaining a virgin. The prize for the winner of the competition was the bridal union and the punishment for the loser was death. Many were those who fell at the feet of the young woman until Hippomenes, with the help of the goddess Aphrodite, overcame her, reaching the hand of Atalanta. This would be a vulgar happy end, if the young man had not forgotten to thank the goddess of love properly. Enraged by this offense, Aphrodite caused the couple to consume the marriage within a temple consecrated to the Mother Goddess and, as a punishment, were both turned into lions.eng
