Turismo Ornitológico no Baixo Mondego: proposta de um roteiro de observação de aves

Abstract

O turismo ornitológico apresenta-se como um produto turístico de nicho cada vez mais procurado e praticado por indivíduos de todas as nacionalidades, que se dispõem a viajar com um objetivo: observar aves. Em Portugal tem-se registado um crescente interesse por este tipo de turismo, resultado dos inúmeros projetos ligados à observação de aves ou a eventos exclusivamente dedicados a esta temática, mas também pelo aumento do número de agentes de animação turística que disponibilizam serviços relacionados com esta atividade. Dada a localização estratégica do território português, o turismo ornitológico (o birdwitching) tem no território nacional condições para se afirmar como um produto de excelência, pela diversidade concentrada de paisagens e de avifauna, quer seja pelas inúmeras espécies de aves que ocorrem no país, quer seja pela exuberância paisagística das áreas classificadas, comparativamente com outros destinos turísticos. Para estas áreas classificadas, a observação de aves pode constituir-se como fundamental para a conservação e gestão destes territórios, atenuar a sazonalidade da procura turística que se verifica nestas e nas regiões onde se inserem e desenvolver, deste modo, um produto turístico marcadamente sustentável e de consciencialização ambiental. Esta Dissertação de Mestrado centra-se no turismo ornitológico, apresentando a sua génese e evolução. Sustenta que o turismo ornitológico é um turismo de nicho a desenvolver em Portugal. Traça uma caracterização, muito completa e atual, da observação de aves em Portugal. Elege em termos de análise a região do Baixo Mondego, apresentando a situação atual de quatro Áreas Importantes para as Aves (IBA) para a prática de birdwatching: a Reserva Natural do Paul de Arzila (RNPA), o Paul da Madriz, o Paul do Taipal e o Estuário do Mondego. Em termos de investigação empírica esta dissertação combina o trabalho de campo com a aplicação da técnica entrevista. Uma entrevista estruturada para conhecer a opinião dos responsáveis pelas empresas de animação turística registadas nos municípios do Baixo Mondego que disponibilizam como oferta a atividade de observação de aves. Os resultados da investigação permitem concluir que apesar do território evidenciar recursos singulares a oferta turística não se encontra estruturada, a que acresce o estado de abandono das Áreas Importantes para as Aves (IBA). Para além disto este trabalho apresenta a proposta de um roteiro ornitológico para o Baixo Mondego. No final é possível encontrar medidas de ação para valorizar o turismo ornitológico no centro de Portugal, em geral, e no Baixo Mondego, em particular.

Ornithological tourism is a niche tourist product increasingly sought after and practiced by individuals of all nationalities, who are willing to travel with one goal: bird watching. In Portugal there has been an increasing interest in this type of tourism, as a result of the numerous projects related to birdwatching or events exclusively dedicated to this theme, but also by the increase in the number of tourist agents that offer services related to this activity. Due to the strategic location of the portuguese territory, ornithological tourism (birdwatching) has in this national territory the conditions to affirm itself as a product of excellence, for the concentrated diversity of landscapes and birds, and for the numerous species of birds that habitat in the country or either for the scenic exuberance of the classified areas compared to other tourist destinations. For these classified areas, the observation of birds can constitute a fundamental for the conservation and management of these territories, to mitigate the seasonality of tourist demand that occurs in these and the regions where they are inserted and to develop, in this way, a markedly sustainable tourism product and environmental awareness. This Master's Dissertation focuses on ornithological tourism, presenting its genesis and evolution. It maintains that ornithological tourism is a niche tourism to be developed in Portugal. It traces a very complete and current characterization of birdwatching in Portugal. It elects in terms of analysis the Baixo Mondego region, presenting the current situation of four Important Bird Areas (IBA) for birdwatching: the Reserva Natural do Paul de Arzila (RNPA), Paul da Madriz, Paul do Taipal and the Estuário do Mondego. In terms of empirical research this dissertation combines the field work with the application of the interview technique. A structured interview to know the opinion of those responsible for the tourist animation companies registered in the municipalities of Baixo Mondego that offer as offer the activity of birdwatching. The results of the investigation allow to conclude that although the territory evidences singular resources the tourist supply is not structured, in addition to the state of abandonment of the Important Bird Areas (IBA). In addition, this work presents the proposal of an ornithological route for the Baixo Mondego. In the end it is possible to find measures of action to value ornithological tourism in central Portugal in general and in Baixo Mondego in particular.
