Attachment has an important role in human sexuality, being equally relevant in the prediction of sexual attitudes and behaviours. Thus, it is important to asses the individuals’ vulnerability to engage in risky sexual behaviours, as well as to examine if they have a greater or lesser perceived risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD), namely HIV infection. Nevertheless, the literature in this area is still limited and the associations have not been consistent. The aims of this study were to assess the association between attachment representations and perceived risk of HIV infection and the engagement in sexual risk behaviours. The analysis of the role of emotion regulation on the described associations, as well as whether these associations were moderated by gender, were also aims of this study and represent an innovative contribution. The sample of this cross-sectional study comprised 616 participants of the general population (75.5% female), who were recruited through an online survey. The assessment protocol included a set of self-report questionnaires, which assessed socio-demographic data and information related to sexual history, perceived risk (Perceived Risk of HIV Scale), attachment representations (Experiences in Close Relationships – Relationship Structures) and emotion regulation (Emotion Regulation Questionnaire). The results of this study revealed that more than half of the participants who engaged in sexual relations in the last three months (80.2%), did not use a condom (62.7%), although most have done it with a regular partner (92%). The results also showed that higher attachment-related anxiety and avoidance were significantly associated with a higher perceived risk of HIV infection and that, overall, the attachment representations were not associated a higher engagement in unprotected sex. Emotion regulation was not found to have a mediation role in the association between attachment, perceived risk of HIV infection and engagement in sexual risk behaviours. In addition, it was not found a moderated mediation by gender. The results of this study underscore the importance of creating new awareness politics and psychological interventions that contribute to a growing consciousness of the importance of using contraception in sexual relationships and the inherent threats of unsafe sexual practices.
