dc.description.abstract | Sudden death due to digestive pathology accounts for about 10 to 20% of all causes of sudden death. In this context, considering the multiple causal situations, the most relevant in national clinical practice are upper digestive hemorrhage caused by rupture of esophageal varices, upper digestive hemorrhage due to peptic ulcer and peptic ulcer perforation. Therefore the aim of this study is to characterize them, considering pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis, risk factors and treatment/prevention; as well as to indicate other causes of sudden digestive death. Thus, a review of the available national and international literature on the topic of sudden death originated in the digestive system, was performed. As so, 53 articles on sudden death of the digestive cause were found, of which 34 articles were analyzed based on clinical cases and 9 scientific articles. The conclusions observed during this anlysis are explored and systematized acording important variables.Among the several predisposing factors we emphasize the excessive alcohol consumption, advanced age and use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and acetylsalicylic acid. After this review, we recognized the lack of large population-based studies, both nationally and internationally, on sudden digestive death, remaining still uncertain its causes, prevalence, incidence, associated comorbidities or habits. Keywords: Sudden digestive death; Digestive pathology; Esophageal variceal hemorrhage; Peptic ulcer hemorrhage; Peptic ulcer perforation. | eng |
