Chile is a country with a great territorial extent. From deserts to glaciers, mountains to shore, this country presents an unparalleled variety of geographic characteristics. Populated by local indigenous and settlers that arrived from all parts of the world, it didn’t have an homogeneous cultural tradition, which allowed for the territorial characteristics to be featured as the country’s cultural identity. Thus, Chilean heritage lies on its territory and in the way communities have appropriated it and built their way of dwelling. In this sense, the value of place is of great importance in this context and the way it is characterized, a specificity relevant to be analyzed and considered in works of architecture.Taking as stand point the intervention GrupoTalca performed in Pinohuacho, in 2006, the values of identity and culture are here explored not only in relation to the community with whom these architects worked with but also to the place that lead to it and that it later on characterized. In accordance to the Chilean culture, where the inhabitants participate on the construction process of the places they inhabit, this work addresses social and territorial concerns. Pinohuacho was a woodcutters community that, by lack of provisions, was considering to find solutions elsewhere. In this sense, it faced the risk of disappearing and, with it, the place it inhabited. GrupoTalca’s intervention intended the creation of a dynamics in the place that would allow for its maintenance. For it, the architects started off by performing local recognition, in search for its problems and virtues, for which the contribution of the inhabitants was found as fundamental so as to inform the design of the proposal.Even though it was a small scale simple intervention, the scope and results it accomplished reveal the pertinence in getting to know local values, culture and necessities, allowing for a strategic input to the intervention. This approach, that derives from Talca school’s stand point, where the architects of the group, Rodrigo Sheward and Martín del Solar, studied, emerges as a response to the specificity of the Chilean cultural context. In this sense it is also important to study the way in which the reality of the country influences such interventions and how other architects interpret it and include it in their projects.Edward Rojas, architect whose work is centered in Chiloé, an archipelago placed in the southern region of Chile, reveals how the local identity can be materialized and how the reinterpretation of its traditional elements can play a fundamental role in its preservation. His stand point derives from local recognition, for which the direct contact with the inhabitants of the settlements of the region is taken as crucial. Also, the work the architect Alejandro Aravena develops in the housing complex Quinta Monroy, in the center of the city of Iquique, located in the North of the country, reveals similar concerns. In this project, the architect takes the participative approach, that characterizes the Chilean culture, as key element to its design. By including the inhabitants in the characterization of their inhabiting spaces, he accomplished its suitability to the resident’s individual needs as well as the creation of a proximity and sense of belonging, so important for the community that lived there. In conclusion, it is intended a reflection on the potentialities of architecture in its possible approaches to the territory, either with the purpose of constructing meaning, or of preserving the existing cultural and local legacy. In this sense, it becomes pertinent to study the way in which the place, Man and the work of architecture interact, how the relationship between the three is taken and maintained and what results it allows for. How the Chilean architecture takes on this issue reveals itself as an example and important contribute for contemporary architectural practice and, hence, pertinent to be addressed.eng
