IDEAL INDUSTRIAL - Para uma abordagem conceptual à intervenção no património industrial

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem como objectivo fazer uma incursão no universo industrial, em especial em Portugal, especificamente nas fábricas, equipamentos geralmente de grande escala e com uma vasta profusão no território, que se deparam actualmente com novos desafios à sua continuidade. Outrora parte integrante da cidade e da vida dos seus cidadãos ao albergar o sector mais dominante num passado recente, hoje em dia grande parte delas encontra-se numa situação de abandono. A este claro afastamento está subjacente o evoluir da sociedade que com uma geral melhoria nos indicadores de qualidade de vida e o advento do computador durante o séc. XX, realinhou o seu foco para um sector terciário em veloz crescimento. A cidade em constante comoção e adaptação desenvolveu-se à imagem desta mudança de paradigma, o escritório, o comércio e os serviços ganham destaque. Além da atenção redireccionada, as fábricas que se disseminaram rapidamente encontravam-se agora em excesso pois muitas das produções foram sendo abandonadas. Países com custos de produção mais baixos ou factores como a globalização ajudaram no decaimento da indústria. Grande parte destas construções, familiarizadas com agitação diária pois eram edificadas para realizar certas tarefas dinâmicas, passaram a ser sinónimo do exacto contrário - passividade e impasse, ruína industrial consagrada que se vai diluindo na cidade incansável que a absorve. Surge com interesse perceber o que estes espaços expectantes foram e o que são, entender que potencial possuem enquanto possíveis elementos qualificadores da cidade e que programas de interesse podem albergar para a melhorar. O estudo destes elementos deve ser caso a caso pois o planeamento além de limitado não é generalizável, deve-se portanto perceber que tipos gerais de atitude interventiva existem e quais as suas particularidades. Visto a procura da arquitectura pela melhoria do espaço urbano ser incessante, e de forma a transformar um problema numa solução, devem-se definir estratégias de intervenção. Estimular o desenvolvimento de perspectivas multidisciplinares num espectro amplo e flexível, desde o mais conceptual ao mais detalhado. No formular de abordagens deve-se focar em exercícios de curto a médio prazo com uma atitude temporária e mutável, aliado a um alto respeito à preexistência, para um edifício ou complexo de média escala em contexto urbano relevante. Usa-se o caso de uma antiga fábrica de Coimbra “A Ideal”, inserida num enquadramento estagnado, mas cheio de potencial, para demonstrar uma abordagem conceptual a esta problemática.

The present dissertation aims to do an incursion on the industrial universe, especially in Portugal, specifically in the factories, generally large scale buildings with a vast profusion on the territory, that nowadays face new challenges to their continuity. Formerly, integral part of the city and the lives of the citizens by hosting the most prevalent sector in a recent past, today most of them are in a situation of abandonment. This clear departure underlies the evolution of society that with a general improvement in quality of life indicators and the advent of computer during the 20th century, realigned its efforts to a rapidly growing tertiary sector. The city in endless commotion and adaptation developed accordingly to this paradigm shift, the office, commerce and services are drawing attention. In addition to the redirected focus, the factories that once spread quickly were now in excess induced by the abandonment of many productions. Countries with lower production costs or factors such as globalization helped in the downturn of the industry. Most of these buildings, familiarized with restless settings because they were built to perform certain dynamic tasks, are now synonymous with the complete opposite - passivity and precariousness. Established industrial ruin that is being diluted in the tireless city that absorbs it effortlessly.It is of interest to understand what these waiting spaces once were and what they are today, what potential they possess as possible rejuvenating elements of the city and what programs of interest they can lodge in order to improve it. The analysis of these elements must be on a case-by-case basis since the planning, besides having limitations is not generalizable, therefore it is necessary to understand what general types of intervention exist and what their particularities are.All things considered, architecture and its search for the improvement of urban space is incessant, and in order to transform the problem related to these spaces into a solution, strategies of intervention must be defined. The development of multidisciplinary perspectives in a broad and flexible spectrum, from the most conceptual to the most detailed, must be stimulated. While formulating approaches, one should focus on short to medium term exercises with a temporary and adjustable attitude, with a great respect for the building and its essence, for a medium-scale building or complex in a relevant urban context. To demonstrate a conceptual approach to this problem in a stagnant but full of potential setting, we chose an old Coimbra factory, named “A Ideal”.
