O mágico e o demoníaco. Figurações, práticas e efeitos na escrita literária portuguesa dos séculos XIII e XIV

Abstract

O mágico e o demoníaco, categorias e dimensões de inequívoco relevo e multímoda funcionalidade na mundividência da Idade Média europeia, podem (e devem) ser perspetivadas como faces distintas mas interligadas de uma mesma representatividade concetual, porquanto, mesmo com características naturalmente diversas, estão, em regra, interrelacionadas e ganham sentido mais evidente no diálogo permanente que parecem querer manter. O momento fundamental da cristalização e aproximação destes dois conceitos terá ocorrido aquando da conversão dos pagãos por parte dos cristãos. A criação dos demónios, por exemplo, é em grande parte devida a uma incongruência do politeísmo com o primeiro mandamento da Lei de Deus; por sua vez, a magia, que tinha sempre existido, vê-se em grande medida diferenciada em “negra” e “branca” com base na sua ligação ou não com os demónios. De resto, na medievalidade não existia uma fronteira cristalinamente definida entre o natural e o sobrenatural, pelo que o mágico e o demoníaco estavam até profundamente ligados à vida quotidiana. E isso reflete-se também, de modo inevitável, na criação artística, em particular nas obras de génese literária. Nesta tese demonstrar-se-á e defender-se-á que tais tematizações são amiúde integradas e trabalhadas em diversos textos que dão corpo à escrita literária em Portugal (i) logo a partir de 1200, com o amplo labor que por cerca de cento e cinquenta anos dá origem às cantigas trovadorescas galego-portuguesas (profanas e marianas), (ii) depois com a disseminação, desde a segunda metade de Duzentos, da matéria de Bretanha e de trechos prosísticos inseridos em projetos genealógicos como o Livro Velho de Linhagens e (iii) por todo o século XIV, particularmente com o aprofundamento da literatura linhagística e cronística, de que o Livro de Linhagens do Conde D.Pedro e a Crónica Geral de Espanha de 1344 são expoentes máximos, sobretudo neste último caso (na sua segunda redação, de cerca de 1400). A diversidade dos géneros textuais permitirá também identificar as estratégias estéticas dominantes, transversais e modeladoras desses elementos do mágico e do demoníaco que neles comparecem. Para além disso, o corpus integra obras que apesar do lado ficcional mantêm um lastro fortemente ligado à realidade histórica, como são exemplos a crónica, os livros de linhagens e até as cantigas de escárnio e maldizer.

Magic and demonic, categories and dimensions of unequivocal relief and multifaceted functionality in the European Middle Ages, can (and should) be seen as distinct but interconnected faces of the same conceptual representation: Even with naturally diverse characteristics, for how much interrelated, they gain more evident meaning in the permanent dialogue they seem to maintain. The fundamental moment of the crystallization and approximation of these two concepts has occurred during the conversion of the pagans by the Christians. The creation of demons, for example, is largely due to the incongruity of polytheism with the first commandment of God's Law; on the other hand, the magic, that had always existed, is largely labeled as "black" or "white", based on its connection with demons or lack thereof. Moreover, in the Middle Ages there was no well-defined border between the natural and supernatural: Magic and demonic were deeply related to everyday life. Inevitably, this is also reflected in artistic creation, particularly in literary works. In this thesis, we will demonstrate and defend that such thematizations are often integrated within several texts that shaped the literary writing in Portugal: (I) from year 1200, with the extensive work that for about 150 years gave rise to the Galician-Portuguese troubadour songs (profane and Marian); (II) with the dissemination, since the second half of the thirtheenth Century, of the matter of Brittany and of prosaic passages inserted in genealogical projects like the Livro Velho de Linhagens; (III) throughout the fourteenth century, with the deepening of the lineage and chronological literature, of which the Livro de Linhagens do Conde Dom Pedro and the Crónica Geral de Espanha de 1344 are maximum exponents, especially the latter (in its second redaction, dated about 1400). The diversity of textual genres will also identify the dominant aesthetic strategies, crosscutting and shaping the elements of magic and demonic. Furthermore, the corpus shows literary works that, despite the fictional side, maintain a strong bond with the historical reality, such as the chronicle, the books of lineages and even the cantigas de escárnio e maldizer.
