THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING EUROPE: THE VISION OF THE PORTUGUESE EPISCOPACY The process of constructing Europe led to the creation of various entities that aimed to coordinate the action of the Churches so as to guarantee that they would be represented in European Council of Episcopal Conferences (CCEE) in 1971 was a significant step. Ye within the framework of the European Community, there was a need to create a new body that would unite the bishops of the member states of the EEC. Consequently, on the initiative of John Paul II, the Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), based in Brussels, was created on 3 March 1980. Besides its specific goals - to raise awareness and knowledge among bishops (and by extension the ecclesiastical communities), to demonstrate the collegiality between the bishoprics, to encourage reflection on the challenges that constructing Europe brought to pastoral work, and to establish regular contact with community politicians, members of parliament and institutions - COMECE alo mediates between other ecumenical commissions and expands its activities to other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The Portuguese bishops have made an intense contribution to this dialogue and activity, within both the CCEE and the COMECE.
