The definition of textile coating is known as the polymeric normally polymeric layer that coats a textile substrate and gives them new properties. These technical features can make them more flexible and water proof, among others. The main reason to apply them in distinct areas is the fact that you can create and manipulate materials according to the needs of society. Nowadays, the polymers more used in coatings are rubbers (natural and synthetic), the poly(vinyl chloride), acrylic polymers and polyurethanes that coat substrates like cotton textiles, polyesters, nylon, aramids, and others. The synthetic or artificial leather is a material which results from a textile coating and can be used as a substitute for natural leather. In the context of this work it was intended to develop coating of artificial leather for application in cars’ upholsteries. In the current market the two types of artificial leather more commercialised for this application are the called “leatherette” made from PVC and the “porometric imitation leather” which are polymer based by polyurethanes. Polyurethanes have advantages in relation to the PVC for presenting breathability, high thermal stability and good mechanical properties. Being this work inserted also in the area of Green Chemistry, cellulose fibers were introduced in polyurethane based materials formulations that can serve as coatings like artificial leather. Different based of polyurethane IMPRANIL DLN-SD were prepared and the cellulose fibers were incorporated in this formulations. A surfactant was also included, in order to improve the performance of the emulsion. Micronized fibers were tested as well. The formulations were thermally cured by gradually increasing temperature until originate films. Through the analysis of the materials obtained by ATR-FTIR it was confirmed the formation of the polyurethane linkage. Every film with paper pulp fibers were homogeneous, very flexible, glossy, partial transparent, smooth, with a good mechanical resistance and a little bit sticky. The films whith micronized fibers presented were very homogeneous, with an opaque and dull milky aspect, equally flexible and with good mechanical resistance and less sticky. The chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated as well. Relatively to the water absorption capacity of all materials, it can be stated that acceptable taking values between 30% and 45% depending on the concentrations of the Triton X100 and cellulose fibers used. The SEM analysis allowed observing the smooth, homogeneous and non porous materials subjected to this analysis. All materials showed, from the TGA analysis, high thermal stability with degradation temperatures above the 320ºC. The high flexibility of the materials was also proved by the DSC analysis, Tg’s (between the -50 and -51,74ºC) were obtained. From the measurement of the contact angles with water and the determination of the surface tension and correspondent polar and dispersive components it was possible to observe the hydrophilic character that all materials present. Although the materials were submitted to traction tests, it wasn’t possible to obtain results due to technical problems during the work execution. However, it could be suggested that the materials which included fibers, had a plastic behavior, rather than what was observed on the non fiber materials (produced and characterized for reference values). In spite of not being able to highlight cellulose composites, F1-Triton2 and FM10- Triton2 are the best. The first where it was included cellulose fibers from bleached pulp and the second where it was used micronized fibers.
