Violence and childhood in ancient Greece: three aspects of an issue

Abstract

A violência dirigida contra crianças com vista à sua eliminação é um tema assíduo na mitologia, na literatura e na arte gregas, mas as fontes antigas preservam ecos de outros aspectos da problemática em análise. Após uma breve introdução, este estudo centra-se na violência cometida por menores e no recurso aos castigos corporais em contexto educativo familiar e escolar, a fim de examinar algumas das fontes literárias e iconográficas mais relevantes sobre esta questão, dos primórdios da Época Arcaica à Helenística.

Violence against children in order to eliminate them is a recurrent theme in Greek mythology, literature, and art, but the ancient sources preserve echoes of other aspects of the issue under review. After a brief introduction, this study focuses on the violence committed by minors and on the use of corporal punishment in family and in a school educational context, in order to discuss some of the most relevant literary and iconographic sources on the subject, from the beginning of the Archaic period to the Hellenistic.
