Sub-adults’ age-at-death estimation is important in anthropology in order to understand the general health conditions of the past populations. Therefore, the present study was performed with the following objective evaluate the usefulness of the widths of the epiphysis of the humerus, femur and tibia in the estimation of the sub-adults’ age-at-death. The analyzed sample belongs to the Identified Skeletal Collection of the University of Coimbra, and is composed by 56 individuals aged between 7 and 20 years at the time of death. Linear regressions and r2 values were calculated for the relation between chronological age and epiphyseal widths and lengths of the diaphyses. The linear regression models were used to estimate the sub-adults’ age at death. The results show that there is a strong correlation between age and the width of the proximal humeral epiphysis (r2=0.747). The same does not happen for the proximal and distal epiphyses of the femur and the proximal epiphyses of the tibia, where a moderate correlation with age is observed. Regarding the long bones’ shafts, correlations with age are strong (humerus-r2=0.732; femur-r2=0.759; tibia-r2=0.728). With the aim of testing the validity of the regression equations an archaeological sample of unidentified sub-adults, coming from a necropolis of the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Faro (XVI -XIX centuries), was used. This sample is composed by 31 sub-adult individuals aged between 0 months and 9 years ±2 years at the time of death. The age estimated from the regression equations developed in this study was compared with that estimated by Paredes et al. (2015) from the dental sequence of formation and eruption, and if this was not available, from the dental calcification. The results of such comparison were not good. The error proved superior to 60%, except for the proximal humeral epiphysis with a 28.6% error. These results may be an effect of the fact that the two samples have different age intervals. The average age of the sub-adults from CEIUC was about 16 years whereas the Faro’s individuals were approximately 19 months-old. In the future, it would be desirable that the regression equations presented here were tested in another archaeological or museum sample, composed of individuals with closer ages of those who were used in this research.por
