Transições geracionais na arquitectura contemporânea portuguesa : Gonçalo Byrne, entre o atelier da Rua da Alegria e as novas gerações

Abstract

A história da arquitectura, opulenta de cultura e vontades, é similarmente dotada de relações intrínsecas, de saber e conhecimento, que a preenchem e valorizam. Estas conformidades, que geram verdadeiras afinidades electivas, são normalmente procriadas quer sobre o estirador em sala aberta, quer por transmissão directa na experiência de trabalho e de vida. Desta forma, não menos importante que investigar a temporalidade histórica imanente à prática arquitectónica, é o estudo da genealogia da sua aprendizagem. Para esse efeito, e restringindo o tema a uma amplitude mais concreta, torna-se seminal a referência ao Atelier da Rua da Alegria, de Nuno Teotónio Pereira, espaço singular no exercício da Arquitectura que terá sido, despretensiosamente, uma grande “escola” de Arquitectura e que terá conduzido Gonçalo Byrne na afirmação da sua prática, cedo criada e já difundida, designadamente a arquitectos como Manuel e Francisco Aires Mateus, Paulo David e João Pedro Falcão de Campos. Este encadeamento arquitectónico, que na história da disciplina e da profissão, assenta em relações entre mestre e discípulo, é ainda, através destas colaborações, mensageiro de uma herança cognitiva desmedida, que permitirá atestar até que ponto é que na transferência e partilha de conhecimento se verificam pensamentos de continuidade, ou transformação de métodos, teorias e linguagens.

O estudo destas transições geracionais partindo da genealogia Atelier da Rua da Alegria - Gonçalo Byrne - Novas Gerações permitirá, além de clarificar esta vertente da formação arquitectónica, estudar a criação e procriação da obra de Gonçalo Byrne, um arquitecto de referência para a arquitectura portuguesa. De acordo com esta perspectiva, a presente investigação tem como objectivos gerais contribuir para a clarificação das transferências de conhecimentos entre gerações, vinculadas ao panorama da arquitectura portuguesa; bem como criar uma leitura das metodologias entre a arquitectura de uma e de outra geração, através da interpretação da obra, métodos e pensamentos de cada arquitecto, por forma a perceber o que permanece e o que se transforma. Relativamente a objectivos específicos, pretende-se perceber de que forma a ligação ao Atelier da Rua da Alegria foi determinante para Gonçalo Byrne; e o que altera na relação com a cidade ao longo deste arco temporal. Da mesma forma, procura-se compreender de que maneira é feita a recepção de questões como a inserção no contexto, insistentemente desenvolvidas por Gonçalo Byrne, pelas novas gerações. Este estudo pretende igualmente disseminar e amplificar estas transições, bem como intervir sobre o nosso tempo. No que diz respeito ao Método de Arquitectura1, que terá suscitado o interesse e a reflexão por parte do arquitecto Nuno Portas e do arquitecto Gonçalo Byrne, pretende-se perceber de que maneira estas questões foram transferidas e reajustadas, e de que forma se revelaram mais, ou menos, determinantes. Por último, pretende-se clarificar o papel da cultura arquitectónica, do contexto e do tempo, para as permanências ou transformações existentes neste ciclo. Se o método é, em grande parte dos casos, uma influência da experiência de trabalho, transposto de pessoa para pessoa; a linguagem é, por sua vez, mais contextual e portanto, uma influência do tempo e da cultura. Assim, e tendo em conta que a cultura, os métodos e as formas se encontram em permanente mutação, como resistirá essa herança?

The history of architecture, opulent in culture and wills, is also filled with intrinsic relations and knowledge that add value to itself . These accordances, that generate true elective affinities, are normally imprinted either on the drawing board in an open room or by the experience of life and work. This way, investigating the historic timing of the art of architecture is as important as the study of its learning genealogy. In order to achieve this and restricting the theme to a more specific extent, it is crucial to mention the Atelier of Rua da Alegria, by Nuno Teotónio Pereira, a unique space for the exercise of Architecture that has been, humbly, a great “school” of Architecture and that led Gonçalo Byrne to its confirmation, soon created and broadcasted to architects like Manuel e Francisco Aires Mateus, Paulo David and João Pedro Falcão de Campos. This architectural chain that historically lays on the relationship between master and disciple, through these collaborations is still the messenger of a cognitive heritage that will evaluate how the transfer and sharing of knowledge enables thoughts of continuity or transformation of methods, theories and languages. The study of these generational transitions, based upon the genealogy Atelier da Rua da Alegria – Gonçalo Byrne – New Generations will allow to study the creation and procreation of the work of Gonçalo Byrne – a reference for the Portuguese Architecture – as well as clarify these branches of architectural formation. According to this perspective, the present investigation’s general objectives are contributing to the clarification of the knowledge transfers between generations, linked to the Portuguese architectural scene; as well as creating a reading of the methodologies between the architecture of one and another generation, by interpreting the work and the thoughts of each architect, in order to understand what is transformed and what remains. Regarding specific objectives, this investigation intends to understand how the connection to the Atelier of Rua da Alegria was an inspiration for Gonçalo Byrne; and what changes in the relationship with the city through this length of time. Furthermore, it tries to understand how the new generations receive some essential questions, like the relation between architecture and its context, persistently developed by Gonçalo Byrne. This study also intends to disseminate and amplify these transitions, as well as intervene in our time. In what concerns the Método de Arquitectura2, that has raised the interest and reflection of architect Nuno Portas and Gonçalo Byrne, it is intended to understand how these details were transferred and readjusted and how they revealed more or less determinant. Finally, it is intended to clarify the role of the architectural culture, the context and time, for the transformations on this cycle. If the method is, in most cases, an influence of work experience, passed on from person to person; the language is more contextual and, therefore, an influence of time and culture. For this reason, and keeping in mind that culture, method and form are in permanent mutation, how can this heritage resist?
