Abstract: A presença judaica na Península Ibérica e nomeadamente em Portugal remonta às origens da nacionalidade. Em Belmonte, um dos mais antigos municípios portugueses, a presença da comunidade judaica que ali reside confunde-se com a história da localidade. Da necessidade de preservar a memória e a identidade judaicas, aliada à necessidade de dinamizar as atividades culturais e seus potenciais econômicos, surgiu a idéia de construir um museu judaico em Belmonte, hà pouco mais de uma década. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o papel desempenhado pelo Museu Judaico de Belmonte, sua capacidade de identificação com as singularidades locais e a efetividade de suas ações, como uma instituição destinada à preservação da memória e da identidade judaica e criptojudaica. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica, documental e de campo, buscando contextualizar a instituição museológica através de uma concepção da nova museologia, onde o museu é inserido na vida social, cultural e econômica da comunidade. A conclusão do trabalho possibilitou identificar a articulação do museu com as demais instituições do município e região, para bem cumprir sua missão. Verificou-se, também, sua integração, como parte de um importante projecto de desenvolvimento do turismo cultural na Beira Interior, na Região Centro de Portugal. Description: The Jewish presence in the Iberian Peninsula and in particular in Portugal dates back to the origins of the nation. In Belmonte, one of the oldest Portuguese municipalities, the presence of the Jewish community that resides there is intertwined with the history of the town. From the need to preserve the memory and identity of the Jewish people, coupled with the need to stimulate cultural activities and their economic potential, emerged the idea to build a Jewish Museum in Belmonte just over a decade. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role played by the Jewish Museum of Belmonte, its ability to identify with the local singularities and the effectiveness of its actions, as an institution intended to the preservation of memory and of Jewish identity and crypto Jews community. To achieve the proposed objective were done a bibliographical, documentary and field research, seeking to contextualize the museologicaldirected institution through a conception of the new Museology, where the Museum is inserted in the social, cultural and economic life of the community. The conclusion of the research made it possible to identify the relationship between the Museum with the other institutions of the city and region to fulfill its mission. It was found also their integration as part of an important project of development of cultural tourism in Beira Interior, in the central part of Portugal.
